House of Representative member representing Wamba/Akwanga/Nasarawa-Eggon Federal Constituency, Abdulkarim Usman
A legal practitioner, Hassan Yakubu, has dragged the House of Representative member representing Wamba/Akwanga/Nasarawa-Eggon Federal Constituency, Abdulkarim Usman, to court over alleged breach of contract.
Africa Daily News reports that the People’s Democratic Movement, PDM, House of Representatives candidate, John Mark, had challenged the outcome of the election that produced Mr Usman at the tribunal.
In a suit filed on Friday at the Nasarawa State High Court sitting in Akwanga, the lawyer claimed that the lawmaker had refused to pay for his legal services after defending him from the tribunal up to appeal court in the aforementioned case.
The lawyer, who is also the plaintiff, sought an order of the court to compel the House of Representatives member to pay him the sum of N17million as legal fees and general damages.
The suit file read: “An order awarding the sum of twelve million Naira (N12,000,000.00) only, as professional fees for defending the defendant before the National and state house of assembly election tribunal and before the court of appeal Makurdi.
“An order awarding the sum of five million Naira (N5, 000,000.00) only, to the plaintiff against the defendant as general damages.”
But when contacted, the lawmaker claimed that the lawyer is not his lawyer but had represented the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the said case.
However, our correspondent obtained a letter dated March 20, 2019 which the PDP addressed to the lawyer in respect of MR. John Mark vs INEC and 2 others, directing the lawmaker to settle the professional fees incurred in the case.
The court has slated January 13, 2021 for a hearing in the case.
