Kano Blasphemy: Court Begins Appeal Sitting

The Kano High Court on Thursday commenced hearing on an appeal case of blasphemy before it.

The court had fixed Thursday, November 26, 2020 for definite hearing in the case after the earlier adjournment following the inability of the Appellant lawyer to attend the last court sitting.

The case set for hearing is that of 22-year-old Yahaya Aminu Sharif, sentenced to death by an Upper Shariah court.

Recall that Mr Shariff was convicted on a one-count charge of insulting religious creed, contrary to Section 382 (6) of the Kano State Sharia Penal Code Law 2000.

According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Aminu Yargoje, Mr Sharif’s act was intended to create ill feelings among the Muslim faithful in the state.

Recall that the case had been dragged to African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Banjul, The Gambia, by a Human Rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Femi Falana.
