Goods, Shops Destroyed As Fire Guts Market In Port Harcourt

Goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed following the fire that gutted a market in the Mile 3 Diobu Area of the Rivers State capital, Port Harcourt on Friday night.

While the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, over 10 shops are said to have been burnt down.

It was gathered that the fire service made efforts to put out the inferno but did not have enough water.

They were later assisted by officers from the nearby police station as well as some residents, to put out the fire.

Market fire outbreaks appear to be a recurring incident in Port Harcourt.

In September 2018, a large section of the fruit garden market was razed by fire.

That market was later demolished, rebuilt and reopened for business.

Before that, the new market complex in Old Port Harcourt township was also gutted by fire in 2014.

A similar incident happened at the Mile One market located on Ikwerre road in 2013.
