Emir of Talata Mafara Alh. DR Bello Muhammad Barmo OON
On Monday, 26 April, 2021, Maryam Abubakar of Mairuwa Road, Funtua, Katsina State dragged the District Head of Mafara, Talata Mafara Local Government, Zamfara State to Women's Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), Abuja for alleged forced marriage.
According to the petition exclusively obtained by Africa Daily News written by Maryam and addressed to the Secretary-General, WRAPA, the lady complained that Alhaji Muhammad, Marafa of Talata Mafara; Bello Shehu and Mande Gidan Taba organized a secret wedding on her name with out her consent. The petition added that "the wedding took place secretly aroud 11pm in the night of 14 April, 2021 at the palace of Marafan Mafara along Ruwan bore Road, Opp. Town Stadium, Talata Mafara, Zamfara State without my consent".
Maryam added that "after the wedding, news reached me that I am now wife of Alhaji Mu'awiya Dan Sakai"
The petition stated that "Alhaji Mu'awiya is a rich man in Talata Mafara and people know him with attitude of marrying and divorcing women at any time he desires so" Africa Daily News confirmed that Alhaji Mu'awiya used money and connection to get the wedding conducted as he planned.
In her letter to WRAPA, Maryam exposed that "Alhaji Mu'awiya approached me with offer of marriage and car which I rejected, he realized that my father died, I am orphan, he now want to use his money and connection to marry me against my wish.
Miss Abubakar also stated that that the wedding without her consent has violated her right and capable of making her life miserable.
Maryam Abubakar told Africa Daily News that she dragged Marafan Mafara to WRAPA, because JUSUN are on strike and courts are not working.
