FG, NCS Goes Tough On Smugglers At Seme Border

The Nigerian Customs Service in a bid to halt smuggling activities in the border region will soon deploy the use of drones, aircraft and other geospatial technology in its surveillance work.

NCS Zone A Coordinator, Modupe Aremu, an Assistant Comptroller General of Customs disclosed this during a working visit at the Seme Border Area Command.

Also disclosed was the 300 billion “e-customs” contract, that is end-to-end automation which is about to kick-off is about Information and Communication Technology connectivity where electronic signature, will be used for border management surveillance and which will be used to minimise person-to-person contact to reduce human interaction and make work for the Custom agents more faster and efficient.

While addressing the Command, Modupe Aremu urged the Seme Customs to keep abreast of all the ECOWAS protocols in order to understand what was happening and also informed the Customs Service of the Federal Government's commitment in bringing about upgraded security through Information and Communication Technology on Nigerian borders.

Seme Border accounts for 80 percent of the Revenue collection by the Nigerian Customs Service, where Bello Jibo, Seme Customs Comptroller noted that despite unfriendly economic policies imposed on goods transiting through Benin Republic, and that the Command was able to intercept 1244 suspected smuggled goods with duty paid value of over 856 million naira and also collected about 719 million naira as revenue and processed export volume of 635,149.23 metric tonnes with a free on-board value of 15.5 billion.
