A political pressure group, the Arewa Youths for Peace and Security (AYOPS) has described the North East Development Commission (NEDC) as one of the pillars and successes of the Buhari-led administration in the country.
The national president of the group, Alhaji Salihu Magaji hinged the attributions to the numerous development projects undertaken across the six states in the geo-political zone by the commission.
Magaji, in a press statement made available to the press in Bauchi Friday cited example with the execution of 3, 500 housing units across the zone which, he argued, would go a long way in reducing the housing deficit in the state.
He noted with dismay the infrastructural decay across the Northeast and the bureaucracies that hinder the smooth operations of many government agencies to argument the housing deficit, saying the NEDC should be commended in this regard.
Other achievements of the commission, the group noted, included the empowerment of farmers annually with agricultural machinery and equipment, seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals, extension services and logistics vehicles under its Integrated Agriculture Programme (IAP) covering the whole 112 LGAs in the Northeast.
“The commission under its managing director, Mohammed Goni Alkali is a leading horse in different rescue missions, initiatives and interventions of the Federal Government having changing the narratives of the people of Northeast sub-region who have suffered from various insecurity challenges”.
Group added, “In addition, other essential amenities such as solar-powered electricity, boreholes, police stations, motor-parks, market places, schools, health facilities, among others were provided across the length and breadth of the Northeast, while youths and women were receiving skills acquisition training for self-reliance”.
These, the group went on, were also in addition to giving the youths and women entrepreneurship and vocational skills boost in each of the 1,028 wards of the sub-region, as well as Information training to become self-reliance and fend for a living.
President Salihu Magaji then called on the state governments in the geo-political zone to give the commission all necessary moral and logistics support towards reclaiming the lost glory of the northeast for which it was established.
