Misunderstanding emanating from the sharing of $3,800 obtained from a Yahoo transaction has led to the kidnapping of 23-year-old 400 Level student of SLT Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG), Ojo Tobi David in Azare, headquarters of Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
In a bid to evade arrest, a member of a six-man syndicate that kidnapped the student and also snatched snatched a Toyota Camry 2010, with registration number KYW-925-SB, to whisk their victim away, Damilola James, fell and died in the process.
The suspects were arrested at a military checkpoint mounted by soldiers from the 133 SF Battalion of the Nigerian Army based in Azare.
A press release signed and made available to journalists in Bauchi by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, informed that the suspects were subsequently handed over to the police in what he described as "inter-agency collaboration towards complimenting constitutional mandates of the police as a leading agency in maintaining the internal security".
According to Wakil, "Six (6) suspects were handed over to the command by operatives attached to the 133 SF Battalion based in Azare, Bauchi State.
"The suspects kidnapped one Ojo Tobi David ‘m’ age 23yrs old a 400 Level student of SLT Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG) from Federal Low Cost of Azare town, Bauchi State.
"After kidnapping the victim, the suspects snatched a Toyota Camry 2010 with Reg No.KYW-925-SB took their victim inside and swiftly headed to the Misau Road Azare.
"On receipt of the distress call, the soldiers stationed at Azare/Misau military checkpoint responded immediately and intercepted the stolen vehicle alongside the suspects. Meanwhile, the victim was rescued unhurt.
The police spokesman informed that eight different phones, knife and assorted charms were found in the suspects' possession.
The PPRO added that, "However, one of the suspects Damilola James M of Turum area of Bauchi fell while trying to escape. He was taken to Federal Medical Center (FMC) Azare for immediate medical attention but was certified dead by a medical doctor.
"A preliminary investigation at Divisional Police Headquarters Azare indicates that the crux of the matter was a result of a misunderstanding over the sharing of 3800 US Dollars obtained in the Yahoo transaction.
"The case has been transfered to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Bauchi for further investigation."
