The newly established Federal University of Health Sciences in Azare (FUHSA), Bauchi state has solicited for the assistance and support through the state government for the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to establish an Institute of Oral Health in the varsity.
According to the University's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bala Mohammed Audu, the proposed institute when established through the magnanimity of the commission, would be the first of its kind in the country.
Professor Bala Audu was speaking in Bauchi when the management team of the University paid an audience to Bauchi state Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed where he said, "We want the proposed institute to be the hub of oral health training and practice in the whole country".
He stated, "Your Excellency, permit me to use this opportunity to further solicit for your assistance and support from the Bauchi state government for further intervention, including the use of your influence on the NEDC to establish in the University an Institute of Oral Health which will be the first of its kind in the country".
He noted that apart from the University of Maiduguri, no other University in the North East is offering dentistry, adding "Even when we started dentistry as one of our courses, we were really discourage because we were told it is capital intensive".
Professor Audu added, "And even when the human capital resources are not available in the North, but we still went ahead inspite of all the challenges, and we want it to not become a reality in the North East, but we want it to become the hub of oral health training and practice in the whole country".
The Vice Chancellor who said that the University is the only one among the four new ones established that has taken off, saying it has admitted two sets of students with very laudable courses of human medicine, dentistry, nursing, radiography, nutrition and diatish.
"As we speak to you now, we have already finished our 1st semester and rounding up for 2nd semester of good academic session, and we are about to start admission of the 3rd set of students as soon as JAMB policy meeting is to be carried out at the end of this month".
Governor Bala Mohammed has in a remake commended former president Muhammadu Buhari for sizing the University in Share, and the immediate past minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu for his foresight having taken into cognisance the state's challenges in health human capital.
Senator Bala Mohammed noted with concern that one of the problems bedevilling the health sector in the state is attrition, as after the state's training of doctors and nurses, they leaves Bauchi for greener pastures, saying of the about 100 health personnel the state trained, only about 40 picked the appointments offered them by the government.
