The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has organized an inter-school quiz competition on Climate Change in Bauchi state as part of commemoration of this year’s World Children Day (WCD).
The quiz was held in Azare, Katagum local government area of the state on Friday where Government Junior Secondary School Hadejia, Shira Local Government area emerged the winner of the competition by scoring 20 points.
While Government Junior Secondary School, Katagum took the second position with 17 points and Government Day Junior Secondary School, Yana from Shira LGA took the third position with 17 points.
The UNICEF Focal Person for State Universal Basic Education, Mrs. Halima Umar, said that the competition was not meant for them to panic but to inspire them to read their books and become better students.
The Officer –in – Charge, UNICEF Field Office, Bauchi, Dr Clement Adams said this year’s World Children Day aims to bring attention to climate change and its impact on children.
“These schools were supported by UNICEF to incorporate climate change education into their curriculum. The aim of the quiz is to expose participants to the importance of climate change, focused on issues related to climate change,” he said.
Also in a visit to Government Day Junior School in Sakwa, Zaki local government area, the team of UNICEF assessed the impact of the incorporation of climate change study into the school curriculum. A teacher, Abdullahi Idris Sakwa, said that teaching students about climate change at the junior level would avert several imminent dangers in the future.
“UNICEF trained us last year, provided teaching materials and we are teaching our students the subjects. Not only that, we have about 100 pupils in our nature club, they have projects they carry out.
“Each member of the club has at least one tree he is watering daily. They now preach afforestation against deforestation in our little community.”
He said that the students learned about waste recycling and erosion control and many other things.
Idris also stated that had embarked on massive tree planting in not only the school premises but in their various places of residence.
Hafsat Ali Sanda, a JSS 3 student said they were trained on how to understand the climate is changing and adaptation of practice climate smart agriculture, tree planting among others.
One of the students, Ibrahim Halliru said that he has been able to differentiate between seasons and how to copy their effects.
He said now they learned about afforestation against deforestation in their community and they learn about waste recycling and erosion control and many other things.
