By Suzan Edeh, Bauchi

The Bauchi state government has expressed its readiness to partner with international donors to facilitate the rehabilitation of 2,000 non-functional boreholes in the state.

The State commissioner for water resources,Alhaji Abdulrazak Nuhu Zaki dropped this hint while addressing a delegation from Evidence Action,an international Organisation in a meeting that held in his office in Bauchi.

He said that community data sheet from the state rural water supply Agency, RUWASA  indicates that out of a total of 10,315 boreholes available in the state, only 1,982  are non-functional, adding that the meeting was a pointer to state governments commitment to fight water related communicable diseases in Bauchi State.

"All the MDAs with relevant information  about the water needs of the state would be mobilized to provide required data for the success of the project. We are also assuring you that government  will ensure transparency in the selection of the local governments and wards that will benefit from the project" he said

In his remark, the country Director of Evidence Action,Pharmacist Tope Ogunbi, said that four Local government areas would be selected shortly after a water point verification which would involve the collection of information on key indicators like households per water point, water point type and water point functionality in one ward in each of the 4 LGAs.

" The Selection  of the 4 LGAs and the 4 wards will be determined by population size,Diarrhoea burden of children of under 5 years of age, proportion and types of existing water treatment schemes and evaluation  of the difference between Rural and urban water points and their Community" he said

Mr Tope Ogunbi said that information gathered from the water point exploration would enable his organisation understand the Number,Location and types of Communal water points suitable for the safe water Programme to be implemented in Bauchi state under the Five year project.
