Heavy Downpour Accompanied by Windstorm Killed Four People in Bauchi trade Fair Ground

A heavy rain accompanied by a heavy wind storm that occurred on Saturday night in Bauchi town has killed four people at IBB Square Permanent site of trade fair ground in Bauchi metropolis.

The State Command Police Public Relations Officer  SP Ahmad Muhammad Wakil, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Bauchi ,He said that five people were found in the buildings that collapsed, four of them lost their lives, one sustained injuries.

He gave the names of Those who lost their lives included Abdullahi Abubakar, 38 years old from Yakubu Wanka area, Sadiq Ahmed Alfa, 32 years old resident of Fadaman Mada area, Malam Musa from Maliya Ventures, Tudun Salmanu and Abdullahi Abdurrahman from Gombe state.

The IBB square in Bauchi has for weeks hosted the 15th North-East zone trade fair where the states in the zone attended. The windstorm accompanied with heavy rainfall caused damage to the stalls of Gombe and Yobe states, as well as the various commercial tents in the market.

The state commissioner of commerce and Industry Alhaji Mahmood Baba Ma'aji Abubakar said the destruction of stalls caused by heavy rainfall and windstorm  between eight 8:30 to nine 9 pm on Saturday night.

"This incident occurred around 8 o'clock yesterday, it was due to a heavy downpour and strong windstorm. The state government is deeply concerned with what has happened. It is the work of God and is not something that you put the blame on a contractor or any individual. So this has happened and also affected some parts of the metropolis.

"Certainly the trade fair has closed about a week ago or so now, and people are still doing some little businesses there. It is not those that participated fully there occupied those places involved in this tragedy. The people should now leave the place as the government has asked them to leave the place so they take a stand on it," he said.

"I was there last night and the government has put effort together with the support of the State Emergency Management Agency SEMA Police and the fire service officials. They were the ones who rescued the injured and those that lost their lives instantly," he added.

The Director General of Bauchi State Chamber of Commerce Industry mines and Agriculture BACCIMA Alhaji Sani Tahir Hamid extended the chambers condolences to the families of the deceased He said: “Our condolences to all the families of the four (4) men who died as a result of water and wind that destroyed a building in IBB Square, Permanent Site of Trade Fair Complex, Bauchi.”
