Members of the Islamic movement in Nigeria well known as (Shiites) have submitted a petition against the Inspector General of Police [IGP] and the Chief of Army Staff [COAS] for the Abuja killing of 78 free-Zakzaky protesters.
Attached with the petition is a comprehensive list of the protesters murdered from January, 2018 to May, 2021.

WE HAVE SUBMITTED PETITION TO NHRC, EU & UN AGAINST IGP & COAS
PETITION AGAINST INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE AND CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF FOR THE KILLING OF SEVENTY-EIGHT [78] FREE-ZAKZAKY PROTESTERS IN ABUJA
We write to submit a petition against the Inspector General of Police [IGP] and the Chief of Army Staff [COAS] for the Abuja killing of 78 free-Zakzaky protesters. Attached with the petition is a comprehensive list of the protesters murdered from January, 2018 to May, 2021.
Before anything else, it is pertinent to note that the major reasons for the commencement of the daily free-Zakzaky protest in Abuja are the unlawful arrest and the continued detention of His Eminence Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenah, coupled with their deteriorating health condition while in incarceration.
Notwithstanding police brutality, the protest was started on Monday, January 8, 2018. Ever since then, and in less than four years, the combination of the Army and the Police has with full intent murdered nearly four scores free-Zakzaky protesters, 78 to be more precise; 2 journalists, 2 police officers and many passers-by [Abuja residents].
First, in the year 2018; on Tuesday, January 9, at Wuse Zone 6, by Sky Memorial, some FCT police officers shot Sheikh Qaseem Umar Sokoto in the leg which subsequently led to his unfortunate death on the 5th of February, 27 days after the incident. Yet, on Wednesday, January 10, they opened fire at Area 2, Garki. They killed 3 with cruelty----Aminu Ibraheem Gashua, Adamu Salis Dunari and Bilyaminu Mika'ilu. On Monday, April 16, they killed Ahmad Rufa’i at the National Human Rights Commission.
On Saturday, October 27, during the Arbaeen Symbolic Trek and free-Zakzaky protest, officers of the Nigerian Army killed 5 people at a time at Zuba. Two days later, Monday, October 29, soldiers of the Presidential Guards Brigade, a unit of the Nigerian Army, then under Brigadier General Umar Tama Musa, waylaid Sheikh Zakzaky's followers at Kubo checking-point, close to Mogadishu Barrack. There, they massacred 42 Ashura mourners on the march.
On Tuesday, October 30, the police attacked free-Zakzaky protesters again. They slew 5 in cold blood. Thus, in 2018 alone, soldiers and police officers killed 57 people.
Second, in the year 2019, at Federal Secretariat on July 9, police killed Ja’afar Mika’il Lafiya and Mahmud Umar. The same month, and for the second time, on Monday, July 22, they, under the order of the former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, shot to death 14 free-Zakzaky protesters; a police officer, DCP Usman Umar Belel; a jounalist, Mr. Precious Owolabi and a passer-by [Abuja resident]. The 14 protesters shot by the police included 3 that died afterwards in custody at the headquarters of the defunct SARS.
Third, in the year 2020, on Tuesday, January 21, at Berger Bridge, Wuse, police killed yet another journalist, Mr. Alex Ogbu of Regent Africa Times while covering a free-Zakzaky protest.
Fourth, early this year [2021], on Tuesday, January 26, police operatives attacked free-Zakzaky protesters at the National Human Rights Commission and killed 2 persons, Yunusa Abdussalam and Kabiru Ahmed. They further killed Hassan Muhammad Pandogari at Banex, Wuse 2, in the same January.
In another attack on March 27, police murdered Muhsin Ja'afar at the National Human Right Commission. On April 14, they shot Hassan Abubakar Aliyu to death at Banex Plaza.
Out of the 78 protesters viciously killed in Abuja by both the Police and the Army, in what we have termed *Abuja-Massacre*, we filed 8 suits at the Federal High Court, Abuja and secured 3 favourable judgements. In the 3 judgements, Hon. Justice Taiwo O. Taiwo declared the killing of Bilyaminu Abubakar Faska, Mahdi Musa and Suleiman Shehu by agents of the former Inspector General of Police during a free-Zakzaky protest at Federal Secretariat on Monday, 22nd July, 2019, as illegal, unlawful, null and void and amounting to gross violation of their fundamental right to life.
We are submitting this petition demanding for necessary action against the perpetrators of such crime against humanity, action that will promote and protect the rights of all Nigerians.
While we condemn these barbaric acts and crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army, we also wish to reiterate our commitment to continue protesting until our leader, His Eminence Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife, Malama Zeenah Ibraheem, are immediately and unconditionally released from the unlawful detention.
